Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *sreŋ, *sreŋs): semantic 鼠 (“mouse; rat”) + phonetic 生 (OC *sʰleːŋ, *sreŋs). From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-(l/r)e(j/ŋ) (“squirrel, weasel”) (STEDT). Within Chinese, it may be related to 狸 (OC *rɯ) (however, see there for more). Compare Tibetan སྲེ་མོང (sre mong, “weasel”), Burmese ရှဉ့် (hrany., “squirrel”), Lepcha [script needed] (să-myóŋ, “marmot”), Karbi [Term?] (iŋren, “mongoose”) (< *m-ren), Proto-Karen *hliᴮ (Benedict, 1972; Handel, 2009; Schuessler, 2007, 2009; STEDT). Hill (2019) disputes the Tibetan comparison on phonetic grounds.
