Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *linʔ): semantic 虫 (“insect; worm”) + phonetic 引 (OC *linʔ, *lins). From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *zril (“worm”); cognate with Tibetan སྲིལ (sril, “silkworm”), Japhug qandʐe (“earthworm”), Burmese တီ (ti, “earthworm”) (STEDT; Paul, 1972; Schuessler, 2007; Zhang, Jacques and Lai, 2019). See also 螾 (OC *lin, *linʔ), 蟺 (OC *djanʔ).
