Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *meːŋʔ): semantic 艸 (“grass; plant”) + phonetic 名 (OC *meŋ). A late word; earliest extant attestation is in Shuowen Jiezi (c. C.E. 100). Likely from Austroasiatic.
