Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ɡuːʔ): semantic 白 (“white”) + phonetic 告 (OC *kuːɡs, *kuːɡ). Compare Proto-Tai *xaːwᴬ (“white”) (whence Zhuang hau and Thai ขาว (kǎao)) and Proto-Hlai *kʰaːw (“white”) (Matisoff, 1988).
