Etymology

Unger (1986) reconstructs Old Chinese pronunciation as *pl(j)aŋʔ and considers this item part of a word family under 陽 (OC *laŋ) and related to Thai ปลั่ง (bplàng, “bright”). Alternatively, Schuessler (2007) reconstructs OC *br(j)aŋʔ and includes this in an Austroasiatic word family under 亮 (OC *raŋs). See there for more. Finally, perhaps from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *brwaŋ (“loud; bright”); compare Burmese ပြင်း (prang:, “strong, violent”) (STEDT).
