Etymology
From earlier 姮娥 (Héng'é), altered to avoid the Han taboo on 恆/恒 (héng)/恒, the personal name of Emperor Wen of Han. The name is connected with earlier 恆我/恒我 in the Wangjiatai Qin bamboo-slip Guicang, and has also been compared with 常羲, the moon-goddess in the Shanhaijing.
