Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *maːl): phonetic 麻 (OC *mraːl) + semantic 鬼 (“demon”). Clipping of 魔羅 (MC ma la), from Sanskrit मार (māra, “killing; death; destroyer; demon”). According to Zhengzitong, First attested in 548, on 29 Oct., in an epitaph praising the Buddha
