Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ɡʷɯ): phonetic 求 (OC *ɡu) + semantic 衣 (“clothes”). Probably Sino-Tibetan. Various comparanda have been proposed: * Tibetan གྲུ (gru, “boat (of inflated hides)”) (Bodman, 1980); * Tamang [script needed] (¹kuri, “skin”) (Schuessler, 2007); * Tibetan གོས (gos, “clothes”), Japhug ŋga (“to wear”), Tangut 𗔛 (*gjwi², “to wear”) (Zhang, Jacques and Lai, 2019; Sims, 2025), all from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *gwə (“to wear”).
