Etymology
Shortened from Japanese 花(か)蓮(れん)港(こう) (Karenkō), from Hokkien 洄瀾／洄澜 (Hôe-liân) during Qing-era settlement in 1851. Formerly named 奇萊／奇莱 (Kî-lâi), referring to the Sakiraya Taiwanese aborigines and their settlement.
