Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *bɯl, *bɯls): semantic 肉 (“flesh”) + phonetic 非 (OC *pɯl). From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pəj (“leg; thigh; foot”) (STEDT under *pey). Cognate with Mizo phei (“foot; leg”).
