Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *mlaŋʔ): semantic 糸 (“rope”) + phonetic 罔 (OC *mlaŋʔ). Compare Thai มุ้ง (múng, “mosquito net”), มอง (mɔɔng, “a kind of fishing net”) (Manomaiviboon, 1975). Perhaps the same word as 罔 (OC *mlaŋʔ, “to deceive”) (Schuessler, 2007).
