Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *l'ils): semantic 禾 (“rice”) + phonetic 屖 (OC *sliːl). During the Han Dynasty, the 屖 component was commonly substituted with 隹 (zhuī). Related to 遲 (OC *l'il, “slow; late”) (Liu, 1999; Schuessler, 2007).
