Etymology
According to Xu Shen, it is the pictogram of a print of an animal paw. If so, then it is unrelated to the bottom part of 禹, 离, 禽, and 禺 and also unrelated to 虫, in which it represents the tail of a snake, and 萬, in which it represents the tail of a scorpion. However, Liu Zhao claims that it is related to some of these, having evolved from the bottom parts of 萬, 禽, and 禹 despite its different origins in these characters.
