Etymology

In oracle bone script ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): 木 (“wood”) + 示 (“altar”) – burning of wood to consult the gods. Originally the same character as 奈 In the modern form 木 has corrupted into 出, thus the character can be interpreted as phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *sqʰluds): phonetic 出 (OC *kʰljuds, *kʰljud) + semantic 示 (“altar”).
