Etymology

Unclear. Various explanations exist. Original meaning uncertain. Several related forms can be found in the oracle bone scripts. Generally considered to be an ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意) related to vegetation in some way. Variously thought to derive from 田 (“field”) with 人 (“persons”) and/or 屮 (“sprout”), from 曾 with a seedling, 麥 (“wheat”), from 𠌶 (“inflorescence”) or 萼 (“calyx”), among others. Sometimes 止 (“foot”) was added to the bottom, which is inherited in later forms.
