Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ɡ·rɯm, *ɡ·rɯms): semantic 氵 (“water”) + phonetic 林 (OC *ɡ·rɯm). Related to 霖 (OC *ɡ·rɯm, “long rain”). Wang (1982) considers this cognate with 淫 (OC *lɯm, “to soak; to drench”). Also compare Hokkien 啉 (lim, “to drink”) and Teochew 啉 (lim¹, “to drink”).
