Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *tʰiːlʔ, *tʰiːls): semantic 氵 + phonetic 弟 (OC *diːlʔ, *diːls). Cognate with 洟 (OC *l̥ʰiːls, *lil), and along with it, traditionally derived from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-t(w)əj-n ~ m-ti-s (“water”) and compared with Tibetan མཆི་མ (mchi ma, “tears”) (Schuessler, 2007). However, based on the Baxter-Sagart reconstruction, note stronger resemblance to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rəj (“water; liquid; body fluid”), whence Burmese ရေ (re, “water”).
