Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *pʰoms, *bob): semantic 氵 + phonetic 乏 (OC *bob). Sino-Tibetan. Compare Tibetan འབྱམ ('byam, “to flow over; to diffuse”) (Bodman, 1980). See Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mV-pjam (“to float”).
