Etymology

From English Hamburg or German Hamburg where 堡 is a phono-semantic matching of German -burg (“fortress”); attested as early as 1844 in 萬國地理全集 by German missionary Karl Gützlaff. The noun sense is normally explained as short for 漢堡包／汉堡包 (hànbǎobāo, “Hamburg bun”).
