Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *tʰiːl): semantic 木 (“wood, tree”) + phonetic 弟 (OC *diːlʔ, *diːls) – a wooden ladder. From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *sV-ləj (“bridge, ladder”); compare the first syllable of Burmese လှေကား (hleka:, “stairs, ladder”) (STEDT under PTB *s-l(a/e)y, Schuessler, 2007).
