Etymology
Ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): 木 (“wood”) + 口 (“mouth”) – perhaps referring to the tastiness of its fruit. Shuowen considers it to be a phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ɡraːŋʔ): semantic 木 (“wood”) + abbreviated phonetic 可 (OC *kʰaːlʔ), but this is unlikely.
