Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ʔsoːn, *zoːn): phonetic 贊 (OC *ʔsaːns) + semantic 刀 (“knife”). Possibly cognate with 剪 (OC *ʔslenʔ, “to cut”) (Wang, 1982).
