Etymology

Pictogram (象形) – a battle axe, the original form of 鉞. Almost identical to 戌. Possibly an Austronesian loan, since this kind of axe has been discovered in archaeological sites in areas where Austronesian languages were once spoken; compare Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *wasay (“axe”), Cebuano wasay (Mahdi, 1994; Schuessler, 2007). Also compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *wac (“knife; sword”), Old Mon rwas (“weapon”) (Schuessler, 2007).
