Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *kɯːmʔ): phonetic 咸 (OC *ɡrɯːm) + semantic 心 (“heart”). Etymology not clear (Schuessler, 2007). Note similarities to Burmese ခံ (hkam, “to endure, accept, catch”) (Luce, 1981).
