Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *slaŋʔ): phonetic 相 (OC *slaŋ, *slaŋs, “to look at”) + semantic 心 (“heart, mind”) – to think, to consider. From 相 (OC *slaŋ, *slaŋs, “to observe; appearance”) (“appearance > to visualise > to think”). Cognate to Japhug sɯso (“to think”) and Situ ka-səsō (“to think”) (Zhang, Jacques and Lai 2019 p. 84); from this, one can reconstruct Proto-Sino-Tibetan *saŋ (“to think”).
