Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *dɯːʔ): semantic 彳 + phonetic 寺 (OC *ljɯs). Probably related to 等 (MC tongX, “to wait”) (Wang, 1982). Karlgren (1956) relates this word to 侍 (OC *djɯs, “to serve; to wait upon”).
