Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ɡeːŋ): phonetic 井 (OC *skeŋʔ) + semantic 彡. Originally written as 刑 in ancient texts. Based on the corrupted form of 井, Shuowen mistakes 幵 to be the phonetic component. The variant form 𢒈, which preserves the original phonetic component, is found in tombstones from the Han and Wei times.
