Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *l'eːŋ): semantic 广 + phonetic 廷 (OC *l'eːŋ, *l'eːŋʔ). Related to 挺 (OC *l'eːŋ, *l'eːŋʔ, “to stick out, straighten up; straight, stiff; quite”); see there for more (STEDT). The semantic shift to "courtyard" may be due to courtyards being areas for upright behavior.
