Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *pʰoŋ, *boŋ, *ɡaːds): semantic 夂 (“footprint pointing down, walk”) + phonetic 丰 (OC *pʰoŋ, “bush, brush”) – to meet. According to Ji Xushen (季旭昇), a foot walking through brush, which resists being moved through.
