Etymology
Ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): 壴 (“drum”) + 口 (“mouth”). Duplicated character: 囍. 喜 (OC *həʔ, *həh) may also be compared with 嘻 (OC *hə) and 譆 (OC *hə) (“laughter; exclamation”), and with 饎 (OC *həʔ) and 糦 (OC *həʔ) (“ritual food; cooked grain”), perhaps reflecting a semantic field of joyful expression, feasting, and ritual banquet.
