Etymology
Unknown. Some possibilities for the etymology: * A substrate Tai-Kadai loanword, compare Zhuang maxlaeuz (“monkey”), Lingao ma² lu² (“monkey”), Gelao mu⁶ lau². * From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m(j/r)uk. Cognate with Burmese မျောက် (myauk, “monkey”) and possibly 猱 (OC *ml'uː, *mljiwʔ, *ml'us, “yellow-haired monkey”). Compare 母猴 (OC *mɯʔ ɡoː, “macaque”), 沐猴 (OC *moːɡ ɡoː, “macaque”), 獼猴 (OC *mnel ɡoː, “macaque”) and 馬猴/马猴 (mǎhóu, “macaque”). The latter has the same pre-initial.
