Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *bl'uː) and ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): phonetic 勹 (OC *pruː, “person bending over”) + semantic 缶 (“clay pot”) – "to make pottery; pottery". Perhaps the original character of 陶.
