Etymology

Pictogram (象形) – a plate placed vertically on its side; original form of 盤 (OC *baːn, “plate; basin”). Distinguished from 同 not by the absence of 口 but by asymmetry: the right stroke sweeps outward. Unrelated to 几. See also 般. According to Schuessler (2007), Sino-Tibetan in origin; compare Mizo pum (“whole; all”), Burmese ဘုံ (bhum, “common, public, communal”). See also 法 (OC *pqab, “law”), which may be related, as well as 範 (OC *bomʔ, “pattern, model”).
