Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ljoɡ): semantic 亻 (“person”) + phonetic 谷 (OC *ɦkroːɡ, *kloːɡ, *ɡ·loːɡ) – customs of people. From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ləwk (“custom; manner”) (STEDT, under *luk). Cognate with Tibetan ལུགས (lugs, “tradition; custom”).
